(Scroll Down for Registration Link)

You may join this climate-aware therapist directory if you meet two criteria: 1) You are a dues paying member of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America, Climate Psychology Alliance International, or Climate Psychiatry Alliance—to become a climate-aware therapist; 2) you are a licensed mental health clinician in the United States, Canada or the UK OR you are post-graduate, under supervision, receiving clinical hours in a supervised setting.

About the project

As part of a joint project with Climate Psychiatry Alliance, we are actively recruiting allied mental health professionals who can deliver high-quality, climate-informed psychotherapy for inclusion in a public climate-aware therapy referral list.

What is a climate-aware therapist?

A climate-aware therapist is a professionally-trained psychotherapist who recognizes that the climate crisis is both a global threat to all life on Earth and a deeply personal threat to the mental and physical well-being—the sense of safety, meaning, and purpose—of each individual, family, and community on the planet.

Our shared goal: To use our unique psychotherapeutic skills to meet the multiple, mounting mental health crises arising out of the increasing instability of our planetary system.

A climate-aware therapist:

  • Values that the professional training of the allied mental-health therapy and counseling communities are needed in this fight.

  • Commits to delivering the highest-quality mental health services to all clientele—which can include addressing cognitive, affective, personal, societal, and existential repercussions of the climate crisis.

  • Responds to clientele in a humane and compassionate manner.

  • Acknowledges the complicated nature of the human response to climate crisis, without presuming the presence or absence of climate-related distress.

  • Understands how our relationships to nature and living systems, and our interaction with climate science and climate media can be useful tools for integrating and resolving psychological conflicts and stressors.

Here’s an interview in which CPA-NA Co-President Elizabeth Allured asks Climate-Aware Therapist Wendy Greenspun about what it means to be a Climate-Aware Therapist:

What is required to become a climate-aware therapist?

Therapists listed in this directory need to:

  • Attest to being a licensed therapist in good standing with their state/provincial and professional-licensing bodies.

  • Pledge to deliver professional mental health services that are consistent with the established scientific consensus on the climate crisis.

Inclusion in this directory does not suggest endorsement by the Climate Psychology Alliance-North America, Climate Psychology Alliance International, or the Climate Psychiatry Alliance; These entities bear no legal responsibility for any outcomes and have no financial involvement with individuals or groups on this list. You are responsible for verifying your own license standing as we do not verify licensing information.
