Professional Development Committee

This month we discussed how to respond to a request for one of our members to lead a series of climate change discussion groups, when one does not see oneself as an "expert" in climate psychology. We discussed how to provide a discussion space that can help participants find their own voices, and how the facilitator can role model a willingness to learn about climate psychology, and not need be an "expert" in this, as we all continue to learn as we practice.  We welcome new CPA-NA members who would like to learn more about presenting on the topic of climate psychology.

Scientists and STEM Professionals Support Committee

The STEM Support committee members continue to connect with scientists & build relationships with scientific organizations to provide mental health support during increasingly unstable times. Members continue to host programs individually, for example, an upcoming 6-week Emotional Resilience Program for Boise State University graduate students in the natural sciences. As a committee at large, we have selected several projects to focus on in 2026, including collaborating with the Climate Cafe committee to develop programs for scientific organizations, hosting a film screening, and working on a grant proposal. If you have personal ties to scientists or scientific organizations who may want support, please reach out to committee heads Teddy Kellam or Kristan Childs. And if you are interested in joining our committee, please email us.

Trauma-informed Climate Journalism Project

We led a successful training at the On-Line News Association in New Orleans and taught a class at CUNY’s Craig Newmark School of Journalism related to trauma-informed climate journalism.  In collaboration with the STEM Support Committee, we are developing a grant with the Metcalf Institute to further fund both the CARES Media Initiative and support groups for climate scientists and climate journalists.  If we receive this grant, we will be launching a program providing supportive sessions for climate journalists and climate scientists.  For more information, please contact Rebecca Weston.

Climate Cafe Committees

The Climate Cafe Development Group is offering multiple opportunities for Climate Cafe Facilitators to increase their skills.  Are you interested in practicing with an experienced mentor?  We are excited to be accepting applications for the next cohort of the Deep Dive Facilitators Training, to begin in January 2026.  The application deadline is Dec 8, 2025.  Contact Sadie Forsythe with questions: [email protected]

We are also seeking trained facilitators to co-facilitate taster cafes in collaboration with a senior facilitator for our workshops on How to Facilitate a Climate Cafe. This is a great opportunity to build your skills and confidence after you have attended the workshop as a participant, and even if you have been facilitating your own cafes for some time.  Contact Janet Castellini with questions: [email protected]
