Few explorations of the art of poetry give us functional insight on its powerful processes. This two-hour workshop facilitated by practicing poet-educators offers hands-on experience with tools and processes of poetry, and an understanding of how these resources can be useful in a therapeutic context. Participants will learn approaches to writing and exploring poems that provide pathways to revisiting challenging terrain with a listening presence. The workshop will include discussion and inquiry, with short writing sessions based on approach-specific prompts. As both a making and exploratory space, poetry-as-process can foster a sense of agency—for reflection, exploration, learning, and change.

This workshop is open to the public. No prior experience in writing poetry is required. Although there will be a focus on supporting mental health professionals and allies, anyone is welcome to attend.
